Lauren Hurley, representing RISE Athletics in Colorado and coach with Black Sheep Endurance Project, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss her transition from competing for more than a decade in the triathlon to getting married to her husband, Matt, and having their first son, Wilder, and focusing on a new chapter in her athletic career of competing on the track, where she ran a personal-best 31:49.46 on March 6 at Sound Running's The Ten at JSerra High in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Hurley, 34, shares how she ran, jogged or exercised in some capacity every day during her pregnancy and how that helped her regain fitness post-partum. She reflects on her triathlon career was focused on financial gain and being able to support herself by competing in 11 70.3 ironman events and keeping a consistent schedule of international events after she turned professional in 2010. Hurley shares her ambitions for competing on the track are solely motivated by qualifying for the 2024 Olympics or making a World Championship team for the U.S. in 2022 or 2023. She explains how her aerobic base established throughout her triathlon career would make the transition more likely for Hurley to compete in the marathon, but that the track offers a different challenge for her body anaerobically and requires her to test her limits mentally and emotionally during the latter part of races. Hurley revisits qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials in June in the 10,000, and compares the intense climate at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., to some of the most demanding experiences she faced during her triathlon career. She examines the success that 2016 Olympic triathlon gold medalist Gwen Jorgensen has had since making the transition to competing on the track and in road races, and how much Hurley has benefited from her experience, along with her training group at RISE Athletics. Hurley analyzes the collaboration she has had with RISE Athletics coach Ric Rojas, along with the previous communication she had with coach Tom Schwartz, and how it has helped her mentor and guide athletes better in her role with Black Sheep Endurance Project. She looks forward to racing the 10,000 again April 14 at the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, Calif., seeking the 31:45 standard to compete in June at the USATF Outdoor Championships, followed by her first professional 5,000 on April 29 at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field. Hurley also speaks about the USA Triathlon Collegiate Championships on April 1-2 in Georgia, and the platform it provides for the next generation of elite competitors.
